Some days you’re just on your game 💃🏽
You wake up feeling refreshed, confident and excited for a good day. You get through a challenging workout, eat healthy all day and cook yourself a nutritious dinner from scratch when you get home.
Then a week later…you get busy and tired, and all of that motivation goes out the window. 🤦🏽♀️
This is SO ANNOYING, right?
As soon as we lose our motivation, we have no hope of being consistent in our healthy habits because motivation and consistency go hand in hand! So, how can we get ourselves to a place where we are consistently motivated? 🤷🏽♀️
I’ll give you the answer, but I’m going to get a little technical so stick with me… 👇🏼
There are two kinds of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic.
Extrinsic motivation is driven by external causes and is usually fleeting. This is the motivation that comes right after we binge eat, or when the doctor tells us we have high cholesterol so we eat better and start exercising in order to get it down. Or when we are getting ready for an even or a holiday!
Extrinsic motivation might work in the short-term, but it doesn’t last. To make lasting change and really be consistent, we need to cultivate intrinsic motivation.
Someone who is intrinsically motivated will find enjoyment in the healthy actions themselves (ie. exercising, eating healthy, etc.) and won’t need to involve external factors. This intrinsic motivation is essential if we want to be consistent with our health over time, not just short-term.
It’s right around now that you’re probably thinking…"that’s crap as I’m never going to enjoy kale and burpees".
Once you strike a healthy balance that works for you, you will no longer need external motivators. You will WANT to live that way every day because it will just feel good.
Striking this balance does take some time. Since we are all unique, it really becomes about learning our own bodies and what they respond to. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
