You Can’t Fill From An Empty Cup!

Every heard the saying: “you can’t fill from an empty cup”? 🥛 It is a saying which has been adopted by health and wellness professionals, the world over 🌎 But how many of us actually take time to look after number one (ourselves!) before trying to save, what feels like, the rest of the world? Ironically, it is usually the ones who offer out the stress-management advice and tips for looking after yourself, who are the ones who need to take the advice the most.



GUILT

A common reason I hear being raised as to why we tend to try and look after everyone else, while burning ourselves out in the process, is guilt. Guilt for taking time to rejuvenate and realign ourselves. It is definitely a female trait to try and slow down and take time to make self-care a priority ✨

 

STRESS

We let go of our own self-care when we feel stressed, under pressure or like other people depend on us to be there as a constant reliable source. This can be for many reasons. We can get stuck in the mode of ‘getting stuff done’. We are constantly trying to work our way through a never-ending ‘to do’ list of chores. Similarly, if we have never practised self-care before, we might not know what this looks like for ourselves, making it tricky to find that balance between what needs to be done, and recharging ourselves in the process 🔋


YOU WOULDN’T TRY AND DRIVE YOUR CAR WITH NO FUEL IN IT


Think of yourself as a finely tuned car. You wouldn’t try and keep driving it after the fuel light came on, it was slowing down and was flashing and beeping at you, would you? What would you do? The answer is more than likely that you would take your car to be refuelled so that it can run efficiently and safely again 🚙



SELF CARE

This is why it is so important to take time to show ourselves some self-love and care. We don’t want to slow down or become inefficient in looking after those who depend on us. Ways in which we can practice ‘filling our cup’ are:

Walking
Baths
Meditation
Working out
Meet up with friends
Join a support group of like-minded individuals (our RwL Fitties are pretty cool – join them by clicking here!)



SELF CARE IS NECESSARY

Self-care should never be seen as an indulgence to feel guilty about. It is a necessity for self-preservation 💎
